12% of our garbage comprises of food waste which is regarded as the direct contributor for the green house production i.e. methane. It is very expensive to be disposed off but with very simple techniques and proper food management or food habits one can easily curb down the total food waste.

Sodexo, has initiated a campaign inviting people to come forward and contribute with any means they can for bringing down the levels of food waste in the country. As we already know that cooking less or adequate food and learning the habit of consuming the left over’s the easiest means to achieve the set targets. But when it comes to disposing of the excess of production which is a huge figure gets very difficult. Most of these food wastes are used as landfills which is highly damaging for the environment as it produces methane gas which directly affects the Ozone layer and is the reason for the increase in temperatures around the world. Besides the quantity of food that gets wasted the energy and resources that is put into the production also gets wasted.

FOOD WASTE – DON’T BE TRASHY!

Reports have suggested that an average American throws away approximately 25% of the total food purchased. This means that a quarter of the household income spent on food items gets wasted. This waste when valued in monetary terms sums up to a large amount across the country.

Food waste reduction should become one of the primary concerns of people and the society considering the food shortages in some other parts of the world. The priority should not only be the chalking out of the amount of food we consume but also crossing out of the grocery items from our list which we feel does not gets consumed more often. Practicing the above will not only reduce the food waste but would also lower the cost of expenditure each family does on food items.

Therefore composting or better eating habits with better food shopping habits can be regarded as a solution in order to curb down the total food waste which can also be said to be beneficial for health problems as it reduces its impact on the environment.
