Laryngeal symptoms are indication of disease processes of a vital nature. We can establish early diagnosis if patient report their symptoms when they occurs.
Hoarseness It usually happen in early symptom but some disease cause hoarseness as a late symptom rather than as an early one. Any condition that interferes with normal phonatory functioning of the larynx cause hoarseness. As the vocal cords approximate for phonation, they vibrate; and air that passes through the larynx is variously affected according to the size of the glottic chink, the rapidity of the vibrations, the tenseness of the cords, and other factors. We may determinate the cause of hoarseness by examination of the larynx. If patient with hoarseness longer than 2 weeks, an inspection of the larynx is be done carefully.
Dyspnea Dyspnea is alwalys an ominous symptom that associated with laryngeal disease. It is a condition that indicates a severe obstruction of the airway. There is no dyspnea even if one vocal cord is paralyzed and cannot abduct at all.
Acute laryngeal inflammation is the common condition that cause of larngeal dyspnea. Less swelling is required to causd dyspnea because the glottic opening is smaller in the infant or young child than in thd adult. The other cause of laryngeal dyspnea in adults are malignant growths in the larynx and hypopharynx, giant polyps and various other benign tumors in the larynx, acute angioneurotic edema, trauma (with mucosal laceration or hematoma formation), foreign bodies, and bilateral vocal cord paralysis.
Dysphagia Dysphagia indicate an obstruction of the upper esophagus or the pyriform recess. This condition is not a common symptom. The usually cause of dysphagia is a tumor of the larynx or the postericnid region. Tuberculosis of the larynx may cause dysphagia. We can use lidocaine such as Xylocaine Viscous to make the patient obtain partial relief.
Cough Cough is a part of many laryngeal and thoracic disease, acute and chronic, inflammatory and neoplastic. It is one of common laryngeal symptom. Cough become an aggravating factor as a protective mechanism. Coughing is often the only symptom resulting from a minor laryngeal disorder, such as mild laryngitis caused by smoking.
Stridor Stridor is almost always inspiratory, and, like laryngeal dyspnea, is worse when the patient struggle to breath. It is ominous symptom. A quite approach to encourage gentle breathing and relaxation is most important whe stridor and dyspnea are happened. Do not use narcotics or sedative to induce sleep because sometimes even fatal and dangerous.
Pain Pain is an early manifestation of acute inflammatory disease that usually a late symptom in neoplastic condition. (doc R3nd5n)
