Acute layngitis is often part of a general upper respiratory tract infection. It involves the pharynx, larynx and trachea. The cause of acute laryngitis are vocal abuse, foreign bodies, inhalation of hot gases or flames, or aspiration of caustic solutions (lye) and also infection.

Symptom of acute laryngitis

1. Hoarseness, the patient may lose his voice altogether.
2. Cough
   
   • patient will say that his throat tickles or feels rough.
   • the cough does not produce much sputum unless there is an associated tracheitis and bronchitis.
3. Pain and talking aggravates the discomfort
4. Stridor or dyspnea may be present in patient with very severe acute layngitis

Membranous Laryngitis

The streptococcus can cause membranous laryngitis. A membrane may also be seen as a slough after trauma resulting from steam, hot gases, or aspiration of a caustic. Airway obstruction may be happened in membranous laryngitis. This is particulary true in infant, in whom only a small membrane is enough to obstruct the glottis. Treatment

No specific treatment for the most patient with acute laryngitis. We can treat patient with antibiotics, voice rest, steam or aerosol therapy. Antibiotic lozenges is not recommended because the amount nf antibiotic they contain is small and the risk of sensitization relatively great. Patient with severe acute layngitis may require hospitalization and even tracheotomy
