Technology has obviously become one of major part that contributes much usefulness in the medical world. One of the great inventions is the nuclear technology that today is majorly being used to treat cancer. In the comparison with the situation of many decades earlier, the chances given to the cancer sufferers are much bigger both their chance to recover from this illness and to live longer.

The knowledge about cancer is developing until this very minute and new therapies are invented. The most important element about cancer is the exact diagnosis. This can be carried out using nuclear medical technology, the diagnosis concerning the spreading area of cancer in a patient is generated accurately by using particular device called Positron emission Tomography (PET) Computed Tomography (CT).

In deeper look, PET-CT is three-dimensional color projection to detect any changes or cell activities in the body by using radiofarmaka substance. This technology helps the identification to gain accurate result, especially about the location of the spreading area before the therapy is conducted. Moreover, this also includes the evaluation of responses toward the therapy.

Through PET-CT, the cells of cancers are projected as bright spots because they have higher metabolism compared to the normal cell. In the process, the isotope injected into the patient’s body will be captured by the cancer cells and accumulated so this will then give projection which cancer cells are active.

Compared to Computed Tomography (CT) Scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), PET-CT has faster diagnose and more accurate when being used to evaluate the cancer cells condition on patient. By using PET-CT, the diagnosing procedures are easier because the main step should be taken in only injecting isotope to the patient’s arm one hour before the diagnosing process with PET-CT is conducted.

With PET-CT, doctors will be able to figure out the cancer spreading in the body more accurately and they can plan the required therapies by only targeting the organ needed to be treated without affecting other organs. This prevents the healthy organs from getting radiated.

Even after the surgery to remove the cancer cells from the body, PET-CT can be used to detect if there are tumors remaining or new tumors that may grow again. Besides, this technology helps determining the ferocity of the rumors and gives the biopsy location specifically. In further, any cancer can be diagnosed through this technology including brain cancer, skin cancer, and bone cancer.
